Senator Lucio to Host Expert Roundtable on Hunger in Capitol Monday
AUSTIN — On Monday, February 11, 2013, from 9 to 11:30 a.m., in the State Capitol's Civil Rights Room (3E.4), Senator Eddie Lucio, Jr. (D-Brownsville) will welcome experts on hunger to a Hunger Roundtable Summit.
According to the Texas Hunger Initiative at Baylor University's School of Social Work, 4.2 million Texans are "food insecure," meaning they have uncertain or inadequate access to food. Texas ranks second in the nation for overall food insecurity. At Monday's Summit, key stakeholders from across the state will share their innovative ideas on how to improve the state's response to hunger, through suggested statutory reforms and funding new statewide initiatives.
"Today in Texas, roughly two million children will go to bed hungry. These same children will go through school without a proper breakfast. We have enough food to feed these children and their families," Senator Lucio said. "We have a responsibility to make sure no child is prevented from reaching his or her full potential because they're worried about where their next meal will come from."
Materials presented at the Summit will be compiled into a forthcoming Hunger Summit Briefing Document.
Monday's invited presenters include representatives from the Texas Food Bank Network, The Center for Public Policy Priorities, the Texas Hunger Initiative, and Texans Care for Children.
